Do I need a trailer brake controller?
If the trailer has electric brakes you need a brake controller to operate them, and most US states require trailer brakes once the loaded trailer exceeds a threshold between 1,500 lb and 3,000 lb, set by each state; this site recommends a controller above 1,500 lb.
Thresholds
There is no single national number. Common state thresholds are 1,500 lb, 2,000 lb and 3,000 lb gross trailer weight; a few states set the rule by the trailer's weight relative to the tow vehicle or by axle count. Check the statute for the states you tow through, not only where the trailer is registered. Many manufacturers also require trailer brakes above a stated figure in the towing guide regardless of state law.
Types
Proportional (inertia-sensing) controllers apply trailer brakes in proportion to the tow vehicle's deceleration and are the usual recommendation. Time-delayed controllers apply a preset ramp. Many trucks offer an integrated factory controller with the tow package; the row's tow-package column on each year page tells you whether the configuration includes it.
Wiring
The controller output reaches the trailer through the 7-pin connector. A 4-pin flat connector carries lights only and cannot operate electric brakes.
