Towing capacity by VIN
The VIN gives the model year, model, engine, drive and body. It does not give the axle ratio or tow package, so the result is one row when those do not matter for your vehicle and a range when they do.
Safety: Manufacturer ratings assume a properly equipped vehicle. Your vehicle's certification label (driver's door jamb) and owner's manual override this site.
How the lookup works
1. The VIN is checked for length, allowed characters and the position-9 check digit. 2. It is decoded by NHTSA's free vPIC service (cached for 30 days; nothing else is stored). 3. The decoded make, model, year, engine displacement, cylinders, fuel type, drive type and cab are scored against every manufacturer rating row on this site for that model year. 4. Rows sharing the top score are shown; if there is more than one, the rating is presented as a range with the reason.
Limits
vPIC returns the configuration, not the rating, and never the axle ratio or tow package — the two things that most change a truck's rating. The certification label on the driver's door jamb carries the axle code; use it to pick the right row. Vehicles whose model year has no published rating on this site yet return the decode only.
